LEARN MORE ABOUT FRED ASTAIRE COLUMBUS

FRED ASTAIRE

THE MAN HIMSELF

Fred Astaire (born Frederick Austerlitz; May 10, 1899 – June 22, 1987) was an American dancer, singer, actor, choreographer, and television presenter. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest dancers in the history of film and television musicals.

Astaire was born in Omaha, Nebraska, and began his career in vaudeville and on Broadway in the 1920s. He quickly gained fame as a performer and was soon signed to Hollywood by RKO Pictures. He appeared in a series of successful musical films, often paired with Ginger Rogers, and became one of the biggest box office draws of the 1930s and 1940s.

Astaire was known for his smooth, graceful style and his elegant dance routines, which often featured complex footwork and intricate patterns. He was also a skilled singer and actor, and was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in the 1954 film "The Band Wagon."

Throughout his career, Astaire appeared in more than 10 Hollywood films and worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Gene Kelly and Bing Crosby. He continued to perform and choreograph well into his later years and was honored with numerous awards and accolades, including a special Academy Award for his contributions to the film industry. He died in 1987 at the age of 88.

Fred Astaire Dance Studios

Today, one almost can’t turn on the TV or radio, or open a newspaper, magazine, or web page without hearing a mention of Mr. Fred Astaire in reference to dancing. He has left a lasting impact on the world and when people think of a dancing legend, Fred Astaire is the first to come to mind. We are proud of our great dance heritage which began in 1947 when the Master of dance himself, Mr. Fred Astaire, co-founded our company.

Mr. Fred Astaire, considered to be the greatest multi-talented dancer of all time, wanted to establish a chain of studios under his name to make sure that his techniques would be preserved and passed onto the public. Mr. Astaire was instrumental in the choice of dance curriculum and instructional techniques. With the opening of the first Fred Astaire Studio on Park Avenue in New York City, Fred Astaire brought his immense talent out of the glamour of Hollywood and onto the dance floors of America and the world.

“Some people seem to think that good dancers are born.” Astaire once observed. “All the good dancers I’ve known have been taught or trained. To me, dancing has always been fun. I enjoy every minute of it. I am glad that I can now put my knowledge to use in bringing personal confidence and a feeling of achievement to so many people.”

Today, numerous Fred Astaire Dance Studios located in cities throughout the United States and internationally, are required to maintain the highest standards of excellence through our International Dance Council and Fred Astaire Dance Studios curriculum certification. Although Mr. Astaire is no longer with us in person, our studios have produced a wealth of amateur and professional dancers who are the living embodiment of his style and grace. And we have been privileged to share the positive, transforming power of dance with hundreds of thousands of people – and have helped them discover a healthy, joyful activity they’ll enjoy for their entire lives!
